PCI Compliance
The five major card companies, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and JCB are out to stop the theft of card numbers. To do so, they have mandated that you comply with their Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS).
Aside from their mandate, it is just "good business" to become compliant. Should card numbers be stolen from you, either electronically or in paper form, not only will you have unhappy customers, but you will be faced with paying for the re-issuance of the stolen cards, the merchandise and services that were obtained with the stolen card numbers, and the investigation. These "fines" can range from $10,000 up to a half million dollars. Quite frankly, you can be fined out of business.
The compliancy standards for Point of Sale Systems are very much different than they are for dial up, stand alone, terminals. While both require employee training and compliant equipment, point of sale software must now pass compliancy tests and be scanned on a quarterly basis by an outside service.
